PHESP Review Conan Xbox360

(Conan, Xbox360)
Games, games, games.. ESPV loves video games for entertaining escapism and the team is always debating about what new release to review next. Mostly we are into sci-fi, shooters and action strategy games that offer a lot of game life - but these days, there is a pooload of games out there which kick ass. So, this week we have settled on a fairly new third person action-adventure hack-and-slash (HnS) game that derives from a classic character.. Conan, AKA Conan the Barbarian!

Developed by Nihilistic Software and published by THQ in November (Asia), Conan follows a similar HnS concept to The Lord of the Rings and Spartan: Total Warrior with button mashing and mofo slashing action packed game play. This game took ESPV about 9 days of casual gaming to complete on ‘normal’ difficulty and was a pleasure to play. On ‘hard’ difficulty it’s very challenging… we still haven’t finished it on this setting.

For most of us who were addicted to action films in the 80’s as kids, there was a lot on offer to entertain. Rambo, Predator, Aliens, Terminator and Chuck Noris to name a few.. but Conan was a dude who stuck out for being a hugely masculine hardass with poor English (in the movie anyway), in an ancient mystical world, wielding a sword with his barbarian style and freeing the helpless slave girls from their captures.. highly entertaining! Originally Conan came from novels and comics and was made famous thanks to Arrine’s 80’s films of Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Conqueror which, as usual, did not quite do the character justice but was still an 80’s classic.

Set with a simple storyline (help the girl kill the evil king and massacre everyone in between) Conan excels in simple bloody sword slashing entertainment with a few cool embellishments. True gamers will like the varied attack combos and unlockable new skills as well as the wide range of weapons Conan can carry for one-handed, two-handed, or weapon-and-shield attack styles. And don’t be too quick to judge.. while this game is great fun for cutting your enemies in half and fighting 10 dudes at one time, you cannot breeze through the game simply by button mashing and brute force. Some timing, blocking, weapon skill and combo mastering is a must if you aim to get anywhere. Trust us, we know..

Each level ends with a classic boss fight and Conan has to doge and attack whilst exploiting the boss’s weakness at just the right time. As you progress from level to level, fighting in truly amazing scenes and backdrops (the graphics are sweet) you travel to various contents fighting new foes with different fighting techniques and styles. As Conan wins he achieves new skills, weapons, amour and techniques for increased killing ability and oh yes, and there is plenty of blood in this game.. oooh yes.

For a HnS game on Xbox.. ESPV most deff recommends Conan.

Ma.K Update

I originally posted about Maschinen Krieger back in September and since then have been trawling through Jason Eaton's comprehensive guide to this fabulous brand of mech's and bio-suited soldiers. So without further ado, I give you Jason's very own WESPE model with storyline to match (this guy is so deep in his own Ma.K world!!)

This is the gospel according to Jason (p.s. any toy with ESP in its name has to be good!)

"Only a handful are known to exist, cobbled together from damaged components by a poorly-equipped Strahl garrison located in a trpoical region. It is a heavily modified Kröte, outfitted with an obscenely powerful ramjet scavenged from a cargo transport, Neuspotter antigrav units to help offset the considerable weight, and reinforced legs that withstand the hard landings incurred in the ramjet jumps. Four missile tubes provide defense, and sensor antennas provide data and telemetry.

It was designed to overcome some of the thick impenetrable terrain in it's muddied tropical region, and has the ability to quickly launch itself high into the air, fire on it's target, and land safely out of range. It's swiftness has taken the Mercenary forces by surprise on more than one occasion, as it looks rather clunky.

"The easiest way to construct A safs 'Skinhead' as of this writing would be to use a Nitto AFS, PKA, and some various detail parts - modify a Fireball tank and use a 1/72nd Apache Helicopter nose for the front sighting mechanism."

See what I mean? He is HARDCORE!

Cyborg Advances

Remember those awesome armored robot "suits" in Matrix Revolutions? Well...this could well be the early stages in the development of these types of cyborg suits! This one, in the video clip above, is designed to "give" the wearer increased strength, allowing them to lift greater weights than possible with the normal human body. (Can't wait for the cyborg version of Worlds Strongest Man...they'll be lifting buildings and dragging oil tankers I imagine!)

The potential commercial use of these cyborg suits is infinite and I'm sure that once they are proved useful and economically viable, we'll see many more companies developing products along the same line. So...by the time I'm 60 (about 30 years from now), I should have no problem changing that spare wheel on my car!... if we're not all flying spacecraft by then that is!

If you've seen an interesting article or video on cyborg technology, and would like to share it with our ESPV readers, please post the link in with your comment and we'll do our best to give it a feature!

Right...my cyborg suit is re-charged! Time to take care of that skip outside my house once and for all!

R.I.P. Evel Knievel

The pioneer of daredvil motocross/motorbike stunts & jumps has died at the age of 69. Robert Craig Knievel, aka Evel Knievel had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.

"Evel Knievel was born October 17, 1938, in Butte, Montana. By the end of his career, 35 broken bones put him in the Guinness World Records. And he went through an estimated 200 units of blood to help bring him back to life after countless crashes," said ABC.

All those guys out there making money from Motocross stunt and one-make jump contests owe it to this guy for starting off a phenomenon that has always captured the hearts, minds & imaginations of those watching him. His first jump was at Moses Lake, Washington in 1965 and his last was in 1981 at the Miami Speedway.

Knievel's most famous stunt was probably an attempt to jump the quarter-mile wide Snake River Canyon in Idaho 1974 on his rocket-powered "Sky-Cycle"

Smart Bookshelf

It's been ages since I saw some shelves that really stood out from the rest but these certainly do. This magnetic bookshelf is the work of Swen Krause and was designed for Nils Holger Moorman, a German furniture outfit.

The unit consists of two parts, a giant metal slab that is attached to the wall horizontally or vertically, and individual shelf cubbies that have a strong magnet backing. Stick the cubbies onto the magnetic backing however your inner contemporary designer sees fit. Allowing yourself/consumer to be the designer has so much scope in many fields of design and I reckon these guys could rake it in if properly marketed.
