ESP Video For IDN 15th Anniversary

ESP were asked to make a very short video segment for design mag, IDN's 15th Anniversary Book. With the brief asking us to explore what design would be like, 15 years from now, we decided to create a fictitious computer game that 'immersed' its players into a virtual environment...it was made on no budget, except to buy beer and green.....

A perspective on films 15 years from now

ESPVisuals in IdN's 15th Anniversary hard-cover Book

In 2007 ESPVisuals were invited by IdN to submit some content for their 15th Anniversary special edition hard-cover coffee table book and accompanying DVD. Featuring around 450 artists the book is a phenomenal insight into the creativity of many of the World's top designers and we were ecstatic being asked to be involved!

IdN's only request for the submitted work was that it forecast a particular area of design 15 years from now.

Our contribution comes in the form of a short trailer for a fictional video-game called "Anonymous", where your identity isn't what it appears, and you strive to find out who you really are.

We wanted to show what we thought the future of gaming might hold; a blend between films and video-games where the user not only controls the plot of the film, but is a character within it. In creating a new user experience we thought up the idea of a gaming pod in which a panoramic screen and built in surround sound would enhance gameplay and immerse you deep within the plot.

The book is a real collectors piece and we recommend you take a look for yourselves!

Check out a preview of the book here.

Chameleon Device

The functions of previously separate gadgets like cameras, phones, and music players have come together into single devices in recent years. But juggling all of those functions in one product with multiple personalities is not simple, and confusing interfaces plague many big-selling gadgets.
But a new prototype that is able to predict what function its user wants from the way it is manipulated, shows a more intuitive way to tackle the problem.
A basic version of this concept is already built into a handful of portable gadgets. Some smartphones automatically dim the screen when they sense they have been swung against a person's ear during a call.

They have created a "bar of soap" device, with an LCD screen front and rear. It contains a three-axis accelerometer to measure its motion in 3D, and 72 sensors across its surface to track the position of the user's fingers.

The researchers tested their prototype on 13 users who were asked to pick up several times, holding it each time in turn as if it were a remote control, PDA, camera, games controller, or mobile phone. By analysing the output from the sensors, the team spotted patterns in the way the different users held the gadget, and their grip gave clues about how they expected the device to perform (see image, right).
Those results were used to program the soap bar to guess what was expected of it and respond appropriately by presenting an interface tailored for that function – when held as a camera, the LCD screens display a camera mode.

Adapta Gallery Launch Show Pics

Our Hong Kong trip was amazing! So much happened in the week that we were all there. I will therefore be doing a couple posts for our trip, starting with the "Attention Spam" show itself.
To be able to hang with the artists and show them round my hometown was such a pleasure. Eating weird food, painting on the street, drinking & smoking hard...we did it all and literally got the t-shirt! (I will definitely dedicate a post just for the tees!)

The Beauty of Power Sprayers

I met up with ARE from the DIELOOTED Crew & MEKA last weekend for an extremely fun evening in East London. ARE had brought his Power Sprayer and filled it with some white emulsion. It was my first time to try out large-scale tags and I tell you now, it did not disappoint! I am gonna have to get one of these for myself.....The empowerment you get from doing tags on that scale was great!

I apologise for the quality of the photos, they were all taken on my shitty mobile phone camera.

Self-Repairing Rubber

This is truly astounding! Just imagine the applications for a material which self-heals itself...and this is just the start...If these Scientists manage to refine and increase the repairing abilities, and apply it to metals and other materials, we're in for one crazy future! No more repairs required! No more car right-offs! And of course..robots with self-healing rubber "skin" and hardware!

Check out the original post below(and click on the bbc link to watcha video if you have real time player):

A material that is able to self-repair even when it is sliced in two has been invented by French researchers.

The as-yet-unnamed material - a form of artificial rubber - is made from vegetable oil and a component of urine.

The substance, described in the journal Nature, produces surfaces when cut that retain a strong chemical attraction to each other.

Pieces of the material join together again as if never parted without the need for glue or a special treatment.

This remarkable property comes from careful engineering of the molecules in the material.

The French researchers are already making kilogramme quantities in their Paris laboratories and say the process is almost completely green, and could be completely so with a few adjustments.

'Tiny hands'

The secret of the substance lies in how the molecules are held together.

A piece of normal rubber, says Dr Ludwik Leibler, who headed the research, is actually a single molecule with billion upon billions of smaller units chemically welded together to form a giant tangled network.

Children are always breaking their toys. Wouldn't it be nice if you could put them back together so easily?
Ludwik Leibler
The elasticity comes from the fact that the strands within the network are buckled like a concertina: pull on them and they straighten and elongate; let go and the buckles reappear.

But break a rubber (or most other solids), and the chemical welds - known as covalent bonds - are also broken.

These cannot be remade. Nor can a piece of rubber be remoulded or reshaped.

"We wanted to see if we could make a rubber-like material using small molecules," Dr Leibler of the Industrial Physics and Chemistry Higher Educational Institution (ESPCI) in Paris told the BBC's Science In Action programme.

The trick was to replace the covalent bonds in rubber with weaker connections known as hydrogen bonds.

These are like hands on neighbouring molecules that can clasp together, but let go when broken.

Dr Leibler quickly realised that this meant not only that the new rubber could be recycled and remoulded many times over, but that if separated by a cut or break, the chemical hands at the fresh surfaces would still be waving about ready to bind again.

Child's play

François Tournilhac, who runs Dr Leibler's laboratories, demonstrated the healing to me.

Using a razor blade he severed a thin strand of the yellowish material (the colour of corn oil), showed me the clean square faces, and then pressed them together.

Almost immediately, the grip was strong enough for him to hold the sample just at one end.

Within an hour the bonds had rebuilt themselves so thoroughly that it was possible to stretch the strand to twice its length without any sign of weakness where the cut had been made.

One obvious use, says Dr Leibler, is for self-healing seals.

Puncture a seal in a compression joint with a nail, and the hole would automatically repair itself.

He also has more playful suggestions.

"Why not use it to make children's toys? Children are always breaking their toys. Wouldn't it be nice if you could put them back together so easily?"

The material was developed with the support of the French company Arkema, which is already investigating whether it can be turned into a commercial product.

Real Transformers

These Vids bought a smile to my face because they made me realise how influential the original Transformers cartoons from the 80's must have been! It is crazy to think that in the last 20-30 years the kids that grew up watching the cartoons are now making these robots a reality!

It was amazing-enough to witness what these machines may eventually look like in the recent Transformers Feature film, which stunned us with its detail and mind-boggling animation...but to see any form of working real-life transformer takes everything to a whole new level.

A recent article on MSN cited that AI technology would soon surpass the capabilities of man..perhaps in the next 20 years. Couple this with a further 20 years of enhancing these small transformer robots and we could be looking at a world with Transformers sooner than we think!

ESPV Blog Error

Are any of you finding that our blog is appearing weirdly when you use a Mac with Mozilla Firefox? I have received a couple emails regarding some of the older posts (from approx. 7 days ago) being all spread out over the page instead of being "confined" to a post. Sounds like a coding error in our template, but weird thing is, we havent touched our code in ages......
I would really appreciate it if you, the reader, could leave a comment if the ESPV Blog looks messed up on your screen, telling us if you are using a PC or Mac and what internet browser...
Thanks so much and sorry for any inconvenience caused.

PS3 Game Review: EA's NBA Live 2008

The latest edition to the ESPV gamers room, a fresh 40Gb Playstation 3, has had Dkoda glued to the screen for the last week shooting hoops in EA’s NBA Live 2008.

With the newest generation of consoles bringing sophisticated, glamorous visuals and rendering. Sports Videogames are looking slicker than ever, and with more sub-games and multiple play options, no to mention high definition resolution and smooth-moving animation, EA’s ‘08 release is a breath of fresh everything!

Firstly, the graphics are stunning; sweat shimmers on the players skin; muscles contort with movement, the leather ball actually looks like it’s made of leather. Even the background crowd is more detailed.

The soundtrack is awesome with some really dirty tunes and the in-game commentary is even more accurate in it’s response to the action, with updated player stats and the odd argument for added realism!

Including the regular NBA season and Championship competitions, 08 offers the gamer a chance to create their own NBA Dynasty. In this game mode, the user gets to manage their chosen team, from purchasing the administration staff to scouting and signing new talent. You can even set the teams training schedule for the off-season, chosing where you’d like your team to focus most, whether its offense, defense or just physical exercise.

Gameplay is fairly easy, though some may struggle with the finer commands for setting plays and pulling off stunning moves. The in-game quickplay selection is useful but the method can be a little tricky to perform. Signature moves and improved dribbling skills add a great deal of flare to the experience, but it can take a while to get your timing down on shot-taking, lay-ups and dunks.

Aside from the option of creating your own player from scratch, you can also modify the player attribute ratings, so if you feel like KG isn’t jumping as high as in real life, or AI’s not quite as fast, you can soop these players up to make them better-than-all-star players!

The only real downfall of this latest NBA title from EA is the mundane, plain-jane loading screen. It lacks any of the style and flava witnessed in-game and is on screen just long enough to irritate you...and that goes for the ESPN sponsored NBA quiz that appears whie your next game loads too. For the die-hard fan, sure your gonna love it, but for casual admirers it’s a bit heavy. When will we see actual NBA highlight reels replace these time-stretchingly boring loading screens?!!!! I want fast paced inspirational visuals of the guys on my team to get me “pumped-up” for my next battle!

Besides the loading screens this is a fantastic basketball game, truly representing and reproducing the atmosphere, excitment, strategy and flare of the NBA league. If, like me, you are a fan of the sport then this is the best game on the market! Go shoot some hoops why don’t you?!

PHESP Game Review

(Assassin’s Creed, Xbox360, Ubisoft, November 2007)

HOLLY POO CAKES PEOPLE - this game is a ‘must-have’ if ever we’ve seen one! If you don’t own a gaming console then playing this game will make you wish you did… fix-up, look sharp and steal, buy, rent, borrow an Xbox and play this game noooow or be a loser for the rest of your sad days! (No, I don’t work for Xbox or Ubisoft)

* Feels like: Hitman and Price of Persia style strategy set in a real-life interactive GTA like city, in the year 1191!

As promised, ESPV reviews one of the biggest games for Xbox360 in 2007 - Assassin’s Creed.. simply put, Assassin’s Creed (AC) was hands down the best game we played in 2007. It took ESPV about 3 weeks of casual gaming to complete this game on ‘normal’ difficulty and we wish it took us longer cuz this game is simply a treat to play!
AC is a third person action-strategy game which (one could say) is a cross between Prince of Persia and Hitman.. only much, much better! The game has been a huge success worldwide and has already began work on two other releases for 2008 and 2009 making AC possibly one of the most popular trilogies to be seen on Xbox360.
To cut the long story short, what really makes this game pootastic is the level of interactiveness, freedom, graphics/detail, game play, maps and characters, AI and gaming lifespan.

Story line..
Set in the present day you take the role of Desmond Miles, a retired assassin whose ancestors date back to an infamous assassin brotherhood which was active during the Third Crusade in the year 1191. Desmond has been kidnapped by an unknown, secret society that wish to tap into his ancestor’s DNA memory banks to find an ancient Templar Knight’s secret. By strapping Desmond into a machine (The Animus) that allows him to go back and relive his ancestor’s days during the Third Crusade, the secret organization aims to use Desmond to play as Altair, infamous assassin, and find the Templar Knight’s secret so they may keep it for themselves.

Levels/Game Play..
Each level consists of Desmond going back in time and playing as Altair to assassinate 1 of 8 of the Templar Knights (and murder and kill anyone that gets in your way.. which is allot). Each time a Knight is assassinated a new clue and fighting kill is given to you and the story’s secret slowly unfolds.
Now, AC stands out from all other games mainly for it’s interactive cities in which you wonder around life-like streets completing tasks and locating your target. Each city takes after one which existed during the Crusades such as Damascus and Jerusalem and there are about 3 altogether. Within each city exists complete freedom and life-like features similar to games like Grand Theft Auto. You can wonder around the many streets, talk to the locals, fight with guards, run around the roof tops from house-to-house, stalk your targets and basically do as you please. Each city is huuuge and offers loads of tasks for you to keep amused with, not to mention the graphics and level of interactiveness is truly jaw dropping! At any time you can run from street level, climb a wall, head to the roof and roof-jump your way around.. your character can climb up almost any wall you see (see trailer).
The level of AI is also truly impressive as town folk and guards reactive to the way you act similar to that of Hitman but in far more detail.

For a sneak preview at trailers, screenshots, downloads and more check out assassinscreed.uk.ubi.com for more cool stuff. You won’t regret it. Other previews, demos and walk through demos available by searching UTube.

(PS – stay tuned for more ESPV game reviews including Call of Duty 4, Ace Combat 6 and Lego Star Wars)

Crazy Science : Blending to the Extreme

This is one of the best video series I've seen on YouTube!!!! "Will It Blend?" takes the simple concept of blending to the extreme! Ever wondered what would happen to a light bulb in a blender?...or a baseball? Then these should tickle your fancy! Of course, you shouldn't try any of this at home, and that's why I love it..because I get to see the results without having to, and thus reducing the risk of serious harm to myself or others!

There are loads more in the series but not all of the items are blendable(if that's a word..it is...now) so don't be too disappointed if you pick one that is just a boring still image of what you hope to be an exhilarating show! Also, not all of them are from BlendTec, which ESP considers the Master of the "Will it Blend?" conundrum!

Steeeeee---rike ONE! Robot Baseball

At first this video didn't really strike me as anything spectacular, especially as the robot didn't have any real aesthetic beauty...but after a few seconds I started to realise that it hadn't missed a ball yet!!!....If you've ever watched baseball, the hitters miss quite often! The action of striking the ball is really fluid and after the montage of successful hits the rugged machine, created by Robocross, takes on it's own personality, playing certain pitches with certain strokes. Add a sophisticated outer shell and you've got yourself a fatigue-free, perfect strike-rate-hitter!

Hellraiser Tribute Teddy Troop Custom

A 3.5" Pinhead Teddy Troop. I've wanted to do one for years but was waiting for the right toy to do it with. The walker was an evil mechanised addition to Pinhead; it's made of an old security camera and has the legs of a Ci-boy Ranger. The turret is fully rotational too! Made for the Occupied Territories Show at the Adfunture store on Brick Lane, London.

Pinhead and his walker.

Pinhead operating his death-dealing machine.

I wanted to mix a Hellraiser black with a Steampunk feel. I managed to keep the original 'Camera' text on the side of the walker. (see larger image for details)

Close-up of Pinhead's walker. From above, you can just make out the dashboard controls and the platform he stands on.
